Workshops      Lectures        Quotes from satisfied guilds and students

My specialty is free-motion threadwork; whether it's embroidery, thread painting, appliqué or quilting, I believe that there's really not much more fun a person can have (with a sewing machine, anyway) than to lower those feed-dogs and push down that foot pedal!

I just love to teach. I consider it a privilege to be able share my love of quilting and to witness the process my students go through as they realize that they really can do it! One of my favorite moments happens when I see how a student's eyes light up with excitement  as I tell her (or him) to go ahead, take a deep breath . . . relax those shoulder muscles . . . and let go!  With a little encouragement, and a reminder to keep breathing, everybody can learn to have fun with free-motion!

The following workshops can be expanded, combined or compressed upon request to fit your group's size, needs, space, time, and patience. I am also available for private and/or small group lessons in my home studio in Yorktown Heights, New York.

See below for my current price list.  For scheduling information, please contact me by email, or by phone at 914-962-6131.

Free Motion Satin Stitching
half day or full day

Machine satin stitching with an open-toed appliqué foot is the "traditional" way to finish the edges of your fused machine appliqué designs. I've done it for years, but I always hated having to stop and pivot, stop and pivot, turning the fabric each time to change direction. What a drag! So, I've come up with this unique and "painterly" way of finishing the edges of fused appliqué. Learn tips and tricks and my special "exercise" to help you gain "free motion control" and just have a good time with this very "freeing" technique!

Level: to get the most out of this workshop, you must be comfortable with the operation of your well-adjusted sewing machine. Even beginners can do this!

Bobbin Quilting or . . . Quilting Up-side-down!
one full day or two full days

Detail of Bobbin Autumn Leaves IILooking for a versatile way to incorporate decorative threads, braids and ribbons into your surface embellishment or quilting?  Bobbin quilting is the answer! This workshop will take the mystery and fear ( -- don't be afraid!)) out of the "underside" of your sewing machine as you learn to literally quilt "up-side down!" Create an original  wall hanging as you explore the many exciting effects that can be achieved with thick threads through the bobbin. In the two day version of this workshop, students will have more time at their machines to explore different threads, tensions and techniques.

Level: you must have some machine quilting experience, and be comfortable with your well-adjusted sewing machine.

Thread-painted ButterflyDiscover a whole new side to your sewing machine – Did you know you could use it to embroider without adding any fancy or expensive attachments? Just drop your feed dogs, and with nothing more than your own machine’s straight stitch and zigzag capabilities, you can create textures and designs that can add depth and interest to your quilts. Learn the skills you’ll need to master this fascinating technique! In the full day version of this workshop, you will create a small quilt to practice your new skill. Elizabeth’s original pattern will be distributed in class. The two day version of this class allows a more thorough exploration of different uses of thread painting, and a mini slide presentation, too!

Level: you must have some machine quilting experience, and be comfortable with your well-adjusted sewing machine.

Couching by Machine
half day or one day

Calling the MoonMachine couching is adapted from a hand-embroidery technique — and it’s so much easier with a sewing machine! The variety of materials that can be couched is astounding; you can couch anything from ordinary thread to narrow ribbons, decorative serger threads, and interesting knitting yarns — learn the secrets of couching in this informative and fun class.

Level: you must have some machine quilting experience, and be comfortable with your well-adjusted sewing machine.

Elizabeth "wrote the book" on couching -- or at least the chapter! She contributed the chapter on Couching by Machine for Creative Embellishments, part of the Rodale Successful Quilting Library series.

The Goddess Project  ***NEW LECTURE***
(One hour slide show)

Does every woman have a lovely goddess hiding within?  Elizabeth thinks so! She set out to prove it by creating "The Goddess Project" -- getting all of her quilting friends involved. She shares the entertaining stories of their discoveries as they quilted up goddesses of their own in this up-beat, personal and enjoyable presentation.

My love affair with the Flowing Line
(One hour slide show)

In the art world, "Line" with a capital "L" is used to create depth and shape. In the quilting world, it can be used the same way, and you don't have to be an artist to understand how! In this interesting, informative and personal slide presentation, Elizabeth will take you on a quilting journey to show you how a flowing line can transform a "blah" design into one with a sense of excitement and motion. There will also be an opportunity to fondle quilts afterwards!

Needles: What's the Point?
(one hour slide show)

needlesYes, I realize that most people think sewing machine needles are not necessarily the most fascinating subject around . . .

But . . . did you know that using the right needle for the job really can make the difference between exquisite quilting success and total quilting failure? This informative, amusing and entertaining slide show/lecture will prove that it's true! Maybe that problem you've been having with your quilting isn't your thread, or your machine, or even your skill level -- maybe it's that needle you've been using . . .

Please note: I will provide my own equipment for this digital slide show. All I'll need from your organization is a darkened room, a double outlet to plug into and a screen on which to show it!

Quotes from satisfied guilds and students:

"Elizabeth Rosenberg's lecture was simply delightful. Her quilt creations are beautiful, and her ability to translate what she sees in the world into her quilting was eye-opening... Elizabeth's website has many examples of her work, and is well worth a visit. We were so pleased to see many of her famous quilts first hand, including African Ladies, Fat Ladies series, Strawberry Fields Forever ... to mention just a few." Empire Quilters Guild, New York, NY

"I just viewed your website for the first time and I must say "It's fabulous." ... I would love to take your class "Quilting Upside Down" .... I have already taken two classes with you, and you are a true professional. Educational chairs ... are you listening?" Kathy, Northern Star Quilters Guild, Somers, NY

"You surely deserve great success, both for your designs and for your excellence as a classroom teacher. There, you manage to combine high standards with patience and understanding for those of us struggling to master concepts or skills. You have been a fine influence on my quilting efforts." Sharon, Providence, RI

"I enjoyed your class and (want to) thank you for all the encouragement and inspiration I have received from you. You're the greatest!" Degen, Stamford, CT

"You have opened up new vistas of possibilities -- your class was truly inspirational. You are a great teacher (I'm a 29 year veteran, so I know greatness when I see it) -- combining knowledge, patience and humor." Melanie, Yorktown Heights, NY

and my very favorite . . .

"I was an attendee at your free-motion quilting class last fall. Over the years, you have inspired my daughter (now ten, and also named Elizabeth) with your work. She first saw your work at the Northern Star Quilters show three years ago and asked me to take a picture of your quilt. You encouraged her to take a class, which she did. Just recently, I took her to (The Heritage Quilt Show in) Lancaster. Among all the quilts, she picked out "The Blue Lady" and asked me to take a photo. I smiled when I saw who had created it and asked my daughter if she knew who had made it. Excitedly, I told her that "her Elizabeth" made it. She was so pleased! Thank you for being such an inspiration!" Mary Helen, South Salem, NY
